Netweight is a system extension that executes at startup. When NetWeight 1.0 is placed in the “Extensions” folder of your “System Folder”, it watches all other extensions being loaded at startup, and calculates their sizes. Then it produces two reports named “NetWeight report#1” and “NetWeight report#2”, a text (detailed report) and a picture (pie chart) respectively. You can thus spot the most demanding extensions and deactivate them in order to spare RAM.
• Sizes are calculated according to RAM occupation, not disk. For instance, “CloseView” occupates 43 Kb on the disk (information available through the Finder's “Get Info”), but can occupates more than 300 Kb in RAM, depending on your monitor. On the other hand, “PC/Mac exchange” occupates 366 Kb on disk, but only 19 Kb in RAM.
• Sizes are calculated according to memory usage at startup. Some extensions use additionnal memory after startup.
• The reports are created in your system folder, but you can place aliases of them in your “Apple Menu Folder” to get quicker access to the latest report.
• The name of the file “NetWeight 1.0” must include as many spaces before the first letter as necessary for this extension to be loaded first. Extensions loaded before NetWeight won't be taken into account. For the same reason, Netweight must be placed in the “Extensions” folder, not in the “Control Panels” Folder.
• “NetWeight report#1” includes file types of extensions. The most current types are: INIT (system extension), cdev (control panel) and RDEV (Chooser extension).
• “NetWeight report#1” also includes locations of extensions in memory, for those who care. These locations are: high memory, system heap, or both.
• The pie chart in “NetWeight report#2” is a vectorial drawing editable under “MacDraw” or “ClarisWorks”, etc.
• You can disable Netweight at startup by pressing “option” until you see Netweight's slashed icon.
• Netweight is compatible with systems 6, 7 and 7.5. It is compatible with all extensions tested by its author until today. Nevertheless, should an extension be found incompatible, Netweight would try to warn you immediately after startup.
• NetWheight occupates 17 Kb on disk , 0 Kb in RAM. The total size of reports is around 20 Kb on the disk.
• Netweight speaks French on French Macs, English on all others.
• NetWeight 1.0 is a shareware. Fee : FF50 or $10.
